How We Strive to Live Up to That Standard of Why We Started

I was talking to a friend and respected colleague I admire the other day, and asked them to review my site. This is what they said, "One thing I've noticed while reviewing your site is that your biggest competitive advantage isn't your certifications or warranty, although it's important, is that you teach people. That comes through every time we talk to someone that we have referred over to you. You're not trying to convince someone to buy a repair—they're learning enough to make an informed decision."
Using the ideas they have said, this was our biggest takeaway:
Why We Educate Before We Repair:
Instead of trying to cover quality repairs, pricing, turnaround times, diagnostics, reviews, warranties, and customer service equally, we make education our central focus. We believe an educated customer makes better decisions.
If you have ever left an auto repair shop more confused than when you arrived, you are not alone! If you have gone in and felt inferior, you are not alone. Suzie HATES going in to take her car places, even the dealer, because of the feelings and emotions that goes along with it. That became our central focus - to make EVERYONE feel comfortable and understanding a little more about the vehicle they are driving. We believe our job isn't just to fix the vehicle. It's to help you understand what the fix is so you can make a decision for your family and your wallet. Whether you choose to repair your car, truck or SUV today, or need to sit and baste with it for a bit, we want you to not feel pressured. If you need to shop around after, we get that too! We are not the cheapest, but we make sure that you know what you need done and can be prepared when someone else can quote it.
Google and ChatGPT can help, but it can't diagnose your vehicle. It still needs a human's touch and experience to resolve your issues. We love that the information is more accessible than ever. Many of our customers come in after researching online, watching YouTube videos, or even asking AI what may be wrong. Technology has grown so much! But it can only work with the information you provide. The challenge is, many different vehicle problems create the exact same symptoms. For example:
Check Engine Light
Rough idle
Vehicle won't start
AC blowing warm
Brake noise
Each one can have several completely different causes. A code reader (like the kind they sell at the part stores) is NOT the same as a diagnostic. Every day we hear "the part store scanned it for free" or "I pulled a code and it says xxxxx, so it is this".
A code reader simply tells you where the computer noticed a problem.
It doesn't tell you
what failed
why it failed
what caused it
whether replacing that part will fix anything.
Imagine walking into a doctor's office because your stomach hurts really bad. The doctor doesn't immediately remove your appendix or prescribe medication solely on one symptom. They ask questions, they perform tests, they narrow down possible causes. Then they diagnose the problem before recommending treatment. That's exactly what a diagnostic is.
We have several stories where customers guessed at repairs, based off an assumption or part codes only without a diagnostic. We have seen customers replace sensors, batteries, alternators, ignition coils, even bigger items only to discover none of those parts were actually causing the problem. That money is gone. The original issues is still present, or went dormant and came back later. And now, they need to pay for a real diagnostic and more parts and labor to fix the original issue. My favorite story is about the customer who was told based off a code they needed an engine! We diagnosed properly, I'm not even kidding when I say they only needed a battery and clean terminals! The way this customer cried out of joy, was shocking, that it was such a dramatic difference! If I wasn't here to witness it, I wouldn't have believed it! I know we have her full trust. We could have lied to her to get more money. That is not the way we operate.
Another time not long ago, a customer contacted us about a vehicle that had been sitting for a couple of years after it began experiencing mechanical issues. They were understandably concerned about the potential cost of repairs, so the vehicle remained parked while they decided what to do.
During our initial phone conversation, we explained that before we could even begin diagnosing the original concern, we'd first need to address the fact that the vehicle had been sitting with old fuel for an extended period. Fuel degrades over time, and stale gasoline can damage components throughout the fuel system. Replacing the fuel pump wasn't simply "the repair"—it was the necessary first step to safely and accurately diagnose the original problem without creating additional issues. Since we didn't yet have the vehicle's VIN or license plate number, we provided only a general price range. Every vehicle is different, and even different trim levels or engine options can significantly affect the parts required and the labor involved. We never want to promise an exact price until we've confirmed we're quoting the correct vehicle.
Once the vehicle information was available, we discovered this particular model was equipped with two fuel pumps, making the repair more involved than initially expected. Like reputable repair shops across the country, we use nationally recognized labor guides to ensure our estimates are consistent, fair, and based on established repair procedures—not guesses.
After receiving the updated estimate, the customer did some additional research online and found information suggesting the repair should be much simpler. We completely understand wanting to research a repair before making a decision. In fact, we encourage our customers to ask questions and learn about their vehicles.
The challenge is that online information—whether it comes from a search engine, a video, or AI—often provides a general overview rather than the complete repair procedure for a specific vehicle configuration. It can't physically inspect the vehicle, verify the exact engine or fuel system, identify previous repairs, or account for manufacturer-specific service procedures.
We took the time to explain why this repair required additional labor and why following the proper repair process helps prevent future problems. Ultimately, the customer decided to pursue another option, and we genuinely respected that decision. Not every customer will choose Silva Family Automotive, and that's okay! What matters to us is that every customer leaves with honest information and a clear understanding of their options. Whether someone chooses to have us perform the repair or not, we believe our responsibility is to educate first, recommend what we believe is the safest and most appropriate repair, and never compromise our standards simply to offer the lowest price.
Sometimes that means we earn a customer for life. Sometimes it simply means we've helped someone make a more informed decision. Either way, we've done our job.
Why do our customers keep coming back? One of the things we are the most proud of isn't just our Google Reviews, nor our CARFAX reviews. It is how we have the most amazing customers who bring in every vehicle they own to us. Parents from out of state send their children to us. Friends send their neighbors. Customers who move or live across town still make the drive to get their car's serviced with us because they know they will receive honest recommendations and quality repairs. They know that their vehicle will get done in a timely manner without needing a rental (for 95% of repairs) in time to pick up kids from school or to beat that traffic.
The customers that walk in the door know we treat them like family. Whether they are our actual family, friend, or stranger, we treat and price everyone the same. We know them by name. We know their families and how their most recent vacation was. We know their businesses and support where we can. We get customers who stop by just to say hello or drop off goodies. We love an appreciate everyone.
We respect your time. We know being without your vehicle is stressful. That's actually why most people procrastinate their repairs or taking it in. Our technicians stay focused on completing the repairs efficiently while never sacrificing quality. We don't rush repairs. We actually eliminate unnecessary delays by properly diagnosing the concerns the first time, communicating clearly and planning repairs effectively. We help you prioritize your concern, then let you know what is safety and what is maintenance. Doing this, helps us help you. Appointments aren't required, but appointments help us:
schedule technicians
order parts
minimize wait times
That's customer-focused instead of operational.
Quality repairs start with honest conversations. Not selling. Our goal wasn't to make the most money. It was never to sell the most repairs. It was to help people understand their vehicles. It was to make sure quality auto repair was being done and somewhere we can confidently take our vehicles to without feeling ripped off. This means recommending a repair. This means explaining why something can safely wait. It means helping someone not replace a part they don't need. We believe education builds trust. Trust builds relationships. Relationships are why we are here today.
